Practical Action has successfully concluded its intensive 17-day nationwide campaign on Wednesday, aimed at freeing Bangladesh from the burden of harmful waste and protecting the environment.

The initiative was launched by Practical Action Bangladesh to align with the global observance of International Zero Waste Day.

Running from 30 March, the 17-day national campaign was designed to encourage community-driven solutions in tackling the country’s growing waste management challenges.

As part of the effort, a hands-on exhibition, awareness programme, and a training session were organized on 13 April at Chandrima Udyan in the capital, Dhaka. Participants received practical training on waste segregation and transforming everyday household waste, particularly kitchen refuse, into valuable resources such as nutrient-rich compost.

The wide-ranging campaign was carefully structured not only to raise awareness about waste but to demonstrate tangible processes for converting it into energy and usable resources, advancing environmental protection.

The programme was formally inaugurated by Ishrat Shabnam, Country Director of Practical Action Bangladesh. In her opening remarks, she was joined by Shamsul Arefin, Thematic Lead for Urban Resilience, both of whom underscored the need for actionable strategies that align with the daily realities of Bangladeshi households and communities.

Throughout the campaign, specialists from various waste-management organizations shared insights via social media platforms, outlining collective responsibilities in improving national waste systems. The 13 April event brought these conversations into physical space, featuring live demonstrations on waste separation techniques and the composting of cooking waste, illustrating simple, replicable methods for reducing landfill dependency.

A highlight of the programme was the presentation of awards to winners of multiple competitions organised under the campaign, including project concept entries, essay contests and the nationwide Zero Waste Challenge. One young victor presented the “Magic Cooker,” an inventive yet accessible design that exemplifies the creative potential of ordinary citizens in addressing environmental issues.

The gathering drew a diverse cross-section of society, including Practical Action team members, environmentally aware citizens, journalists, students from across the country, and sanitation workers. Their presence highlighted the inclusive nature of the effort and reinforced the shared stake in building a cleaner, more sustainable Bangladesh.

Organizers noted that the day successfully bridged theory with practice, emphasizing that meaningful progress toward zero waste lies in small, consistent changes in behaviour. With the campaign now complete, Practical Action Bangladesh expressed appreciation to all competitors and participants, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the nation’s ongoing transition to responsible resource management.
